Todd Strasser coming to the Library!!!

On October 26, award-winning children’s and teen author, Todd Strasser, will be at the Wescott Library from 3:30-5:00 p.m. for a teen writing workshop, and at the Galaxie Library from 7:00-8:00 p.m. to talk about his books and writing. The writing workshop is for ages 10-18 years old and requires registration. The talk is open to all.

Strasser has written many award-winning novels for young adults and teens, picking controversial themes like Nazism, bullying at schools, homelessness, school shootings, and sexuality. His works include Give a Boy a Gun, Boot Camp, and Asphalt Tribe, and his most famous work The Wave.

More recently he has embarked in a new humorous direction for upper elementary and middle school readers. Help! I'm Trapped in My Teacher's Body is about a boy who by accident trades bodies with his goofy science teacher, Mr. Dirksen.

He also contributes articles to such periodicals as the New Yorker, Esquire, The New York Times, and The Village Voice. He writes for television, too, and has adapted novels from movies (such as Free Willy) and TV films (such as The Wave) into well-crafted novels that children can enjoy as a reading experience.

The Demon's Lexicon

Nick and his brother, Alan, have spent their lives on the run from magic. Their father was murdered, and their mother was driven mad by magicians and the demons who give them power. The magicians are hunting the Ryves family for a charm that Nick's mother stole -- a charm that keeps her alive -- and they want it badly enough to kill again.
Danger draws even closer when a brother and sister come to the Ryves family for help. The boy wears a demon's mark, a sign of death that almost nothing can erase...and when Alan also gets marked by a demon, Nick is desperate to save him. The only way to do that is to kill one of the magicians they have been hiding from for so long.

Ensnared in a deadly game of cat and mouse, Nick starts to suspect that his brother is telling him lie after lie about their past. As the magicians' Circle closes in on their family, Nick uncovers the secret that could destroy them all.

This is the Demon's Lexicon. Turn the page.

INTERTWINED by Gena Showalter

Most sixteen-year-olds have friends. Aden Stone has four human souls living inside him:

One can time-travel.

One can raise the dead.

One can tell the future.

And one can possess another human.

With no other family and a life spent in and out of institutions, Aden and the souls have become friends. But now they're causing him all kinds of trouble. Like, he'll blink and suddenly he's a younger Aden, reliving the past. One wrong move, and he'll change the future. Or he'll walk past a total stranger and know how and when she's going to die.

He's so over it. All he wants is peace.

And then he meets a girl who quiets the voices. Well, as long as he's near her. Why? Mary Ann Gray is his total opposite. He's a loner; she has friends. He doesn't care what anyone thinks; she tries to make everyone happy. And while he attracts the paranormal, she repels it. For her sake, he should stay away. But it's too late....

Somehow, they share an inexplicable bond of friendship. A bond about to be tested by a werewolf shape-shifter who wants Mary Ann for his own, and a vampire princess Aden can't resist.

Two romances, both forbidden. Still, the four will enter a dark underworld of intrigue and danger but not everyone will come out alive....

Love, Meg A novel by C. Leigh Purtill

This looks like a pretty good book!! Check this out!!!

Fifteen-year-old Meg Shanley knows two things: first, her older sister Lucie is the only family she has. Second, Lucie will uproot her to a new town and a new school at least once a year. This time, it's Hollywood. Alone and lonely in LA, Meg settles into a familiar routine. She scopes out New Friend candidates and determines the shortest distance between home, school and Starbucks. Then Meg discovers a secret that turns her whole world upside down. She has a family she never knew about--an uncle and a grandmother--in Queens, New York. Meg is convinced she can have the dream life she's always wanted. She defies Lucie and flies to Queens. When she arrives--three thousand miles from everything she's ever known--she discovers that real love has always been just a letter away. "Love, Meg is about making the most out of every bend in life's road - the shocks, the betrayals, and the wonderful surprises. If you've ever had a celebrity crush, you'll love Meg, and her story will keep you guessing" --Maureen Johnson, Author of "13 Little Blue Envelopes" and "The Bermudez Triangle"

City of Bones book trailer

This is a GREAT BOOK!!!

Meet an Author

On Wednesday, October 6, the Dakota County Library welcomes Frank Beddor, author of the popular teen trilogy Looking Glass Wars, and the Hatter M graphic novels.

Frank grew up a ski champion in Excelsior, MN but now resides in Los Angeles where he has been a film producer (There’s Something About Mary), and a stunt man before he began writing novels for teens. He is currently CEO of Automatic Pictures, a film, television and interactive game production company.
His Looking Glass Wars trilogy takes the classic 19th century children’s tale of Alice in Wonderland off into a truly unexpected literary territory – the battlefields of epic fantasy. The fantasy-based intrigue and dimension-hopping may remind some readers of another little-girl trilogy, His Dark Materials, but there’s also a sci-fi layer over the tale that syncs up with the The Matrix, a different story with key touches of Carroll imagery. The Looking Glass Wars unabashedly challenges our Wonderland assumptions of mad tea parties, sleepy dormice, and a curious little blonde girl to reveal an epic battle in the endless war for Imagination.
On Wednesday, October 6, come and meet the author who created the heroic, passionate, monstrous, vengeful denizens of this parallel world as they battle each other with AD-52's and orb generators, navigate the Crystal Continuum, bet on jabberwock fights and travel across the Chessboard Desert. He’ll be at the Robert Trail Library from 3:00-4:30 p.m., and the Galaxie Library from 7:00-8:15 p.m.

You can find more about Frank at http://www.lookingglasswars.com/about-folder/FBbio.pdf

HERO-Music Video

I posted the lyrics to this song on the post right before this!

Hero

After reading Thirteen Reasons Why, I have been thinking a LOT about how what we do and say.....and how it affects those around us.
I heard this song on the radio...and it struck me:

HERO By: Superchick
No one sits with him, he doesn’t fit in,
But we feel like we do when we make fun of him,
'Cause you want to belong, do you go along?
'Cause his pain is the price paid for you to belong
It’s not like you hate him or want him to die,
But maybe he goes home and thinks suicide,
Or he comes back to school with a gun at his side,
Any kindness from you might have saved his life...

TAG: Heroes are made when you make a choice...
CHORUS:
You could be a hero,
Heroes do what’s right,
You could be a hero,
You might save a life,
You could be a hero, you could join the fight,
For what’s right, for what’s right, for what’s right...

No one talks to her, she feels so alone,
She’s in too much pain to survive on her own,
The hurt she can’t handle overflows to a knife,
She writes on her arm, wants to give up her life,
Each day she goes on is a day that she is brave,
Fighting the lie that giving up is the way,
Each moment of courage her own life she saves,
When she throws the pills out, a hero is made...

TAG/CHORUS

No one talks to him about how he lives,
He thinks that the choices he makes are just his,
Doesn’t know he’s a leader with the way he behaves,
And others will follow the choices he’s made,
He lives on the edge, he’s old enough to decide,
His brother who wants to be him is just nine,
He can do what he wants because it’s his right,
The choices he makes change a nine-year-old's life...

TAG/CHORUS

Little Mikey-Dee was the one in class
Who everyday got brutally harassed
This went on for years
Till he decided that never again would he shed another tear
So he walked through the door
And grabbed the .44 out of his father's dresser drawer
He said 'I can't take life no more'
And like that a life can be lost
But this ain't even about that
All of us just sat back and watched it happen
Thinking its not our responsibility
To solve a problem that isn't even about me
This is our problem.
This is just one of the daily scenarios
In which we choose to close our eyes
Instead of doing the right thing
If we make a choice and be the voice
For those who won't speak up for themselves
How many lives would be saved, changed, rearranged?
Now it's our time to pick a side.
So don't keep walking by not wanting to intervene,
Cause you just want to exist and never be seen.
So lets wake up, change the world
Our time is now.

You could be a hero - (Our time is now) heroes do what’s right
You could be a hero - (Our time is now) you might save a life
You could be a hero - (Our time is now) you could join the fight
For what’s right, for what’s ri-ight...
